Bernard Burns is the co-founder of Red Iron Partners.  Prior to Red Iron, in 2001 Bernard co-founded the Charlotte office of McGuireWoods Capital Group. Since that time he focused his efforts on generating and leading transactions, serving the needs of its established client base and attracting highly qualified talent to the firm.  Bernard has worked with all of the firm’s clients in connection with over 30 closed transactions.  In addition to his position as a Managing Director of the Capital Group, Bernard has maintained close connections to the business world by serving on the boards of directors of a number of publicly and privately-held industrial, distribution, construction and consumer products companies. Bernard joined McGuireWoods Capital Group from United Dominion Industries, a $2.4 billion New York Stock Exchange company which was a global provider of diversified industrial products and services. United Dominion was acquired in May 2001 by SPX Corporation in a $2 billion transaction.  At United Dominion, Bernard served in a number of capacities, including Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel, President of its Door Products Division, and President of its Building Products, Specialty Engineered Products and Test Instrumentation segments. While President of three different business segments, Bernard was responsible for the strategic direction and financial results of over 20 separate operating divisions. In this role, Bernard led efforts resulting in the consummation of over 20 acquisitions and divestitures in these business units.  Prior to joining United Dominion in 1989, Bernard practiced corporate law in Charlotte for 16 years with the Helms Mulliss firm, which is now a part of the Capital Group’s parent company, McGuireWoods LLP.  Bernard is a native of Greenwood, SC.  He received his J.D. from Duke Law School, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and of the Editorial Board of the Duke Law Journal, and received his B.A. from Furman University (summa cum laude). Bernard is also a graduate of the Fuqua School’s Executive Management Program.
